Dear web-traveler,
If you are reading this, you're no doubt in search of fresh, local, and organic produce for the 2007 growing season. Look no further, for Double T Farm is an established, small scale, organic farm. We only pay attention to quality----the health of the soil, plants, diversity of fauna, and taste.
You may ask yourself "are these guys certified USDA organic?" My reply is no...and with no excuses. Here's why:
1.) People want real, fresh, food, picked yesterday. USDA certification doesn't do this.
2.) People want to know the farmer. The USDA doesn't tell you in person how your food was grown--I will.
3.) Paperwork distracts from the real work of growing. Growing organically requires you to continuously learn through research and observation on your farm, not in a stack of paper. Every farms growing conditions are unique and cannot be addressed by a one size fits all approach. Afterall, YOU are the ultimate certifier when you come out to the farm.
4.) As with any government program, bureaucracy is inefficient in the marketplace when customer buying power at the local level is considered. As soon as I mislead or misinform the customer, I'm out of business. I answer to YOU the customer, not the government.
Besides, why should I certify? Do "conventional" farmers list all the chemicals they use on their products? I use none and have to file all sorts of paperwork?
Bottom line, we follow all the guidelines for fertilizer use and botanical pest control products. We rely heavily on cover crops to feed the soil and creating beneficial habitat to balance pests and their predators. These are things huge mega organic farms don't do.
Chemicals used for pest/disease/weed control and for fertilization are two of the main avenues for exposure to chemicals, and savvy customers are beginning to learn this when it comes to buying fresh fruits and vegetable. The first way to limit these unhealthy substances is to buy from a local, and preferably, organic grower. YOU will be the certifier. YOU have the power. YOU and I, together. Let the USDA certify THAT....sadly, they can't.
